Every NTFS disk drive fails it is just a question of when. Even though NTFS is an advanced file system used in current versions of Microsoft Windows XP NTFS is not immune to data integrity issues.

Just because you can't access data on your NTFS
drive does not necessarily mean the data is lost.

When accessing an NTFS drive, your system follows a sequence from the master boot record to the partition table to the partition boot. When looking for a file on an NTFS partition the sequence is, master file table, data attributes and then cluster chain. If any part of these sequences fail, then the NTFS partition won't be able to retrieve data even if the data is still intact.
